CASE SPOTLIGHT

In 2016, Attorney Heffernan advocated for a father going through a divorce who adamantly did not want his young daughter to see her mother’s new boyfriend. The father had good reason to believe that the boyfriend was an alcoholic who had been investigated by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) for child abuse. The mother initially denied the father’s request to bar any contact between the man and their daughter.

Attorney Heffernan obtained an order from the Family Court that required DCF to turn over its file on the boyfriend and had one of the man’s former girlfriends sign an affidavit stating that the boyfriend had hit her and her child. This same woman also provided pictures of the boyfriend when he was intoxicated. Faced with this evidence, the mother decided to settle out of court, thus saving Attorney Heffernan’s client thousands of dollars in legal fees.
